Welcome to Canonsburg General Hospital, part of the West Penn Allegheny Health System.

A true community hospital strives to keep the residents of its community healthy, not just to serve them when they are sick. That's why Canonsburg General Hospital offers a range of programs to help people preserve their health, as well as special programs to speed recovery when a hospital stay is unavoidable. That's also why we're involved in so many community activities, and why we go to great lengths to reach out to the elderly and infirmed. Most importantly, it's why we provide such a wide range of medical, surgical and diagnostic services close to home. With an active and growing ambulatory care center, along with emergency services, cardiac catherization services, home care and occupational programs. Keeping you well is really why CGH is here.

Serving the community since 1904, Canonsburg General Hospital is conveniently located near Route 19 and Interstate 79 in North Strabane Township.

The 104-bed facility, which includes a 16-bed inpatient acute rehabilitation unit, was built in 1983.  The hospital has undergone several expansions - in 1996 a new ambulatory care center was opened, in 2003 the physicial therapy department was enlarged and in 2006, an 11,200 square foot emergency department was added to accommodate increase patient volume.  Canonsburg General Hospital, along with the nearly 200 physicians on its medical staff, primarily serve residents living in southern Allegheny and northern Washington counties.

Through the West Penn Allegheny Health System, Canonsburg General Hospital is able to ensure that area residents have access to a complete continuum of health care services.  And through appropriate integration across the system, both clinically and operationally, the hospital is able to remain a high-quality, low-cost provider with linkages to the latest medical research and advanced technology.

Canonsburg General Hospital provides a wide range of medical and surgical services, with advanced diagnostic and treatment services accessible on both an inpatient and outpatient basis.  The hospital has an active and growing ambulatory care center, along with emergency medicine services, a cardiac catheterization lab and an occupational medicine program.  The facility also offers specialized services in acute patient rehabilitation, as well as having a strong focus on health education and preventative care that reflects a deep commitment to wellness and health improvement.

Some of the specific departments and services at Canonsburg General Hospital include:

Emergency Care:  The hospital's new Emergency Department opened in July 2006 and features cutting-edge equipment and 18 private, speciality examination rooms.  All of the examination rooms are equipped with cardiac monitors.  Waiting time is minimized since registration and initial patient assessment are performed at the bedside.

Other features within the new department include an enlarged entryway, expanded family waiting area, and expanded parking.  A dedicated medical imaging suite within the department provides digital images within seconds and decreases patient waiting time.

Ambulatory Care:  A full complement of community-based outpatient services are available including same-day surgery, GI procedures, private physician office visits and preparations for myleograms and CT scans.

Medical Imaging:  Flexible scheduling, evening hours and board-certified technologists are among the benefits of this full-service department.  Radiology, MRI, mammography, nuclear medicine, echocardiology, interventional radiology, CT, ultrasound, bone density and PET/CT are included.

Laboratory:  The staff's expertise and commitment to excellence has earned the department certification by the College of American Pathologists, a distinction bestowed upon only 20 percent of the nation's labs.  A full array of services are offered under the direction of a board-certified pathologist. The lab is available to patients six days a week, including early-evening hours.

Cardiac catheterization:  The sophisticated cardiac catheterization lab, in association with Allegheny General Hospital, provides catheterization and peripheral angiography to low-risk patients.

Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation:  Inpatient rehabilitation has a primary focus of helping patients to reach their realistic and maximum potential and independence in living skills, mobility, and communication.  Our 16-bed unit features private rooms, a designated therapy area, 24-hour nursing care, discharge planning, 24-hour emergency care and an activity program.  Since its opening in June 2000, the unit has successfully completed the requirements to be designated as a Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR) Credentialed Facility.  This credentialing status allows the rehabilitation staff to compare its patients' outcomes with patients from across the country.

Nursing Units:  Comfort and quality care are the areas of emphasis for the nursing staff on the hospital's two acute care units, intensive care unit, and rehabilitation unit.  the majority of patient rooms are private.  Patient satisfaction scores for nursing care services are consistently high.

Rehabilitation Services:  The staff offers inpatient and outpatient physical therapy, speech therapy and occupational therapy services.  Evening hours are available.  Vestibular rehabilitation is now offered and has been shown to decrease dizziness, improve balance and enhance a patient's overall functional  mobility and safety.

Cardiology: Services have been enhanced with new equipment and the introduction of the cardiac catheterization lab.  Board-certified cardiologists read results from procedures, including EKG, Holter monitors, echocardiology and nuclear cardiology.

Canonsburg General Hospital's Echocardiology Laboratory recently achieved accreditation by the Intersocietal Commission for Accreditation of Echocardiology Laboratories (ICAEL). According to the ICAEL, the hospital's echocardiology laboratory is one of the first one thousand echocardiology laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico to be so recognized for its commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality testing for the diagnosis of heart disease.
